Alaska Visits Cottey – Summer 2024
Cottey Vacation College
(May 19-23, 2024)
Dust off your suitcase. Check your airline mileage plan. Go ahead, plan your trip to Nevada, Missouri for August 2025 and DO something that is both different and FUN. Consider experiencing Cottey Vacation College. Yes, YOU! After all, as a P.E.O., Cottey is YOUR college!
This year, Cottey Vacation College was held in May, and four P.E.O.s from Chapter C: Susan West, Jackie VanDaff, Barbara Dooley and Cindy Tobias, as well as Chapter Q’s Donna Steinfort travelled from Alaska to Nevada, Missouri for a week on campus to attend fun and varied (and for the most-part non-academic) classes. Vacation College occurs after the regular term is over and students have left campus. Cottey President Dr. Stephanie Niles presides over this event where Cottey alumni and P.E.O.s and their guests come for a week to live in the dorm suites, meet other P.E.O.s, and participate in classes and such fun activities as a reception in Dr. and Mr. Nile’s beautiful brick president’s home, a sing-along around a campfire at the lodge, an ice cream social outdoors on the park-like campus grounds, to name just a few.
And what about the classes? “Paint your pet like Van Gogh”; make cards and gift bags in “Glitter, Glitter Everywhere”; take field trips to varied local museums or to a 100 year old factory that makes beautiful decorative pounded tin ceiling tiles; learn to play canasta; meet in the computer lab to learn about and experiment with Artificial Intelligence; learn archery; take dance classes; practice yoga; play pickleball; enjoy wine-tasting! Guarantee you won’t be bored, and you can skip class to take a walk or sleep in without worrying you might flunk!
Staying in the dorm suites was very comfortable and convivial, with two-bed rooms opening onto a shared “living room,” allowing for both privacy and community with other P.E.O.s, alumni and guests in the same suite. And the food in the central dining area was beyond wonderful! No one goes away hungry.
The Chapter C group book-ended Cottey College with a side trip to Hamilton, MI, a quilting “mecca” which was enjoyed by us all (even though we had only one quilter among us), Then after the college week, we went to Branson, MI and attended a musical, after which we experienced a fierce Missouri thunderstorm which soaked us to the skin while running across the parking lot to our car. This was followed by a late-night dessert in the hotel lobby with still-wet hair but in our dry pj’s! (We have photo proof!)
Cottey Vacation College in 2025 is planned for August 10-15. Check the website cottey.edu for information. YOUR Cottey College is beautiful in both the buildings and the grounds – it is wonderful to see all of this in person! You will be made to feel welcome, will meet new sisters, and you will have FUN!
